“A Different Landscape”
Kevin Southgate is a contemporary artist working from his studio in Suffolk, best known for his evocative landscapes drawn from nature during frequent visits to the Lake District. This inspiration has now manifested into bodies of work from across the country and has proved popular in Kevin’s native area as far way as East Anglia.
While in the lakes Kevin saw for the first time its majestic beauty and was hooked. Kevin has returned each year to walk, draw and photograph the area.
Inspired by the expressionistic working methods of Kurt Schwitters, Russell Mills along with Turner and Joan Eardley, Kevin Southgates’ landscapes begin with a sketch, watercolour or photograph and evolve into unique and transient time capsules.
Large landscape compositions born from experiences are built up using a variety of mediums and collage, layering up colour and texture and scraping back until achieving the desired image - changeable and always yielding more each time observed.
Kevin considers his paintings to be a mixture of instinctive, reactive and experimental. Kevin will use various techniques and materials to achieve a finished painting. Consequently you may find work that appears to be in opposition to another. Kevin is unable to contain himself within a rigid ‘ method’ of painting, which at times can be frustrating beyond words.
