Art Medium: Cold Wax and Oil
Jacqui Bassett is a Locally based artist specialising in oil and cold wax paintings. she is inspired by the diverse and dramatic landscapes of the British Isles, her work is an emotional exploration of land and sky. Rather than simply reproducing what she sees, Jacqui paints intuitively, guided by the feelings and atmospheres she experiences in nature. Back in her studio, the painting evolves organically, revealing itself as she works, much like the landscapes she draws inspiration from.
The interplay between the solid, enduring features of the land and the fleeting, ever-changing light and weather is central to her work. Jacqui captures this contrast, expressing both the certainty of geological formations and the beautiful qualities of the natural world that surrounds her.
Jacqui works primarily with Cold Wax Medium, a unique blend of beeswax, alkyd resin, and odourless mineral spirits that, when mixed with oil paint, adds body, speeds up drying time, and imparts a velvety matte finish to her pieces. Her technique involves layering the paint - Adding and removing layers to reveal hidden textures and colours beneath. This process lends itself to creating diverse and expressive textures, enabling her to evoke the emotional depth of the landscapes she portrays.
“To paint is to attempt to illustrate the powerful and complex relationship we have to our wilds and to convey that sense to the viewer.”
