Philippa is a contemporary artist known for her colourful and expressive landscape paintings. She paints using traditional oil painting techniques, but adds to that a bold and expressive use of colour and brushwork, giving her work a unique vibrancy and dynamic energy that truly captures the spirit of the Lake District landscape she loves.

Inspired by favourite walks and extensive time spent in the Lakes, Philippa has created a collection of paintings for us that truly sing with the joy and wild beauty of our beloved landscape. She is deeply inspired by the ever changing light, colour and weather patterns that are so typical of this part of the world.

When the two worlds of weather and colour intertwine, there is an unerring pull to be immersed in it, to be standing at the water’s edge, scrambling up a hill side, or simply grabbing a quiet moment

Philippa’s paintings start their life out in the landscape. While out walking, Philippa captures places, feelings and atmosphere as she goes, through quick sketches, colour swatches and brief notes. She will return to these back in the studio, where her canvases come to life.

I start with an initial plein air tonal study, the process allows my creativity to intervene at each step. The process: selecting the colour palette to reflect first light at sunrise, or darkening stormy skies, through to final compositional adjustments and surface textures enables the creation of final painting

Philippa’s work is exhibited widely across the UK, and is in public and private collections across Europe, Australia and America.

Artist Statement

I have spent many years fellwalking and experiencing first hand the breathtaking beauty of the Lake District. The fleeting glimpses of light and shade across the landscape created by the ceaselessly changing weather patterns have been a source of endless inspiration. From viewing a tarn from a precipitous fell top or gazing back at rock formations on the shore of a lake, the landscape presents wonderful opportunities for the artist. There is a timeless quality about connecting with the majesty of the landscape, whatever the season. Each visit delivers a fresh emotional response to the ever changing weather conditions. This constant change is what makes this landscape exciting and challenging to interpret and paint in an individual artistic manner.

This particular collection of paintings sprung directly from a series of hikes where the weather manifested all four seasons in a single day. The quality of light generated from these speedy transitions literally appeared to throw colour across the landscape. These situations require an immediacy toward my note taking, sketches and colour plans.
