Art Medium: Ceramic Sculpture
Louise Doughty creates hand-built stoneware hares inspired by folklore, symbolism and the quiet presence of wildlife within the landscape.
Drawn to the almost mythical nature of hares, Louise explores the sense of mystery and folklore that surrounds them. Often associated with moonlight, intuition and transformation, her sculptures reflect both strength and fragility, capturing fleeting expressions and moments of stillness. Their alert posture and delicate markings give each piece a distinctive personality and presence.
Each hare is individually handmade using grogged stoneware clay, chosen for its strength and reduced shrinkage during firing. After an initial bisque firing, layers of oxide washes are carefully applied and wiped back to reveal texture and contour within the surface.
The pieces then undergo several firings, with transparent glazes, mineral oxides and fine gold detailing added throughout the process. Because these natural materials react unpredictably within the kiln, each firing produces unique variations in colour, depth and finish, making every piece entirely one of a kind.
Louise’s work balances technical craftsmanship with storytelling, resulting in sculptures that feel both contemporary and timeless.
