Sheila is a Landscape and Still Life artist with a love of colour and texture.  She has always had a passion for drawing and painting and in 2007 began her career as a professional artist.  Sheila has a growing reputation and exhibits with galleries throughout the UK and also has overseas clients.

The Lake District landscape provides endless inspiration for her work. The Beauty of the Lakes provides all the elements that she loves painting: big skies, dramatic mountains, woodlands and wildflowers.  Her landscape paintings are true to the essence of the scenery but painted in a slightly abstract style.

She paints mainly in oils - enjoying the way the paint dries slowly, allowing her to mix colour and develop texture. She often works quickly - using wet on wet technique.  Mark making is important in her style of painting and she uses both palette knife and brushes to create pattern within her paintings.

Sheila rarely paints with pure colour – preferring colour mixing.  Close inspection will show that her blue skies are a blend of cobalt, ceruleum, ultramarine, violet and other shades.  When painting mountains - she blends colours that appear naturally on the landscape:  mixing yellow green with purple, raw sienna and venetian red to create the perfect hue of distant hills.

As a Scottish artist, I seldom see a sky without clouds and I love painting them.   I always start a landscape by painting the sky, working on a blank white canvas.  I know that you are not really supposed to do that – but I like the way that I can judge colour against the white.   As I work down the canvas, I often change aspects of the scene,  sometimes  scraping paint off – where I am not happy with the result and making changes.   I usually paint quickly – as I like the wet on wet style and the way that texture can be built using thick paint and blending colours.
— Sheila Fowler

Sheila works from her studio in East Renfrewshire, with her favourite subjects being seascape and mountain scenes and countryside with cottages. Her inspiration comes from the beauty and colour of the landscape.  Wildflowers often feature in her landscape paintings and she also enjoys creating still life paintings of flowers.

Sheila regularly travels to The Lake District, Scottish Islands and countryside, making sketches and taking photos to work on back in the studio.  She also enjoys visiting formal gardens to sketch and study the various flowers.

Her paintings are popular and Sheila’s work is sold in Galleries and Art Fairs throughout the UK.  Her work is also in private collections in Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand and the USA.  Recently, her work was featured in Homes and Interiors Scotland magazine, where they gave it the appraisal:

“Fowler has a growing reputation for her bold textural works.”
