Propelled
‘Propelled’ is a one-off remarkable hand crafted sculpture by Northumberland based sculptor Robin Fox and a wonderful centrepiece to his “Rings, Wings and Curious Things” exhibition.
The inspiration behind this piece is drawn from the artists own childhood memories of wanting to fly - big ideas with little wings, always trying to defy convention without really understanding why. The winged feet were a later conception to the piece, as were the finger operated guide wires. The propeller is constructed from repurposed decorative ironwork with hints of a timepiece which gives the idea of motion and moving forward in time. A mix of ‘those magnificent men in their flying machines”, an inventive nature and clever imagination.
Patinated bronze finish epoxy resin and steel, hand-built over a steel armature with the flying machine made of steel, wood and wire repurposed components. The piece is set on a sandstone base with a steel base plate. The stone has been quarried from Ladycross Quarry in Northumberland. The stone shows detailed layers throughout, Robin visits the quarry and carefully chooses the stone for each piece that he feels best matches the sculpture itself.
