Celia Burbush & Nicholas Shaw - ‘Brush with the Fells’
Celia’s fascination with industrial landscapes has lead her to the many remote mining sites hidden in the Cumbrian fells. Working ‘en plein air’ she has captured the enriching history of the local area, in places such as the slate mines of Honister, the lead mines on Catbells, and the copper mines of Coniston.
“The value of the work I undertake is found in the richness of dialogue and cross-fertilisation of experiences, ideas and disciplines. The environment created through my projects incorporates a democratic culture, where diverse voices and abilities are not just deemed welcome, but necessary.” - Celia Burbush
A completely self-taught artist, Nicholas has had a passion for painting his entire life. He is especially drawn to the effects of light on the Cumbrian fells, the way it blazes across the heather in the dwindling hours of the day or the way it kisses the grass along with the morning dew. He seeks not just to capture the beautiful scenes here, but to also express their peaceful serenity.
