Darkness and Light

Darkness and Light is a collection of oil and mixed media paintings inspired by the changing weather and the shifting light falling across the valleys and fells of the Lake District. This is Paula’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and we are delighted to be showcasing this stunning collection of new paintings inspired by the beautiful Lakes.

“I am proud of this collection. It has given me the opportunity to scale up and immerse myself in creating a cohesive collection which is no doubt inspired by the Lakes:  pea green valleys, golden ochre fells, and heavy foreboding skies.

This collection has been painted intuitively, focusing first on the desire to work with particular colours which remind me of walking in the Lake district. This experimental part of the process is like building the foundations of the painting. Layering colour and texture through mark making. Adding glazes to create depth and atmosphere. At times my landscapes are almost abstracted. I like to play with combinations of colours, textures, and expressive marks to create mood, atmosphere, drama.

There is a point in the process where the painting will trigger a memory of a place, of being out in the elements and will suggest a particular direction for the painting. At this point the development of the painting is more considered and I may draw on sketches as well as the memories and the feelings of a place to refine the composition.”

The weather and its impact on the landscape plays a significant part in my work.

Over the last ten years Paula has developed her studio practice, incorporating new techniques as she continues to develop my skills and expertise. She has developed workshops which introduce people to the joy of working in oils and has have coached artists who want to further develop their creative practice.

Paula’s paintings are now owned across the world. Her work has been featured in book designs and she is a contributing artist to the award winning Waymaking – an anthology of prose, poetry and artwork by women who are inspired by the landscape.
