Now in her 80s, Dorothy lives and works near Keswick, drawing inspiration from the west coast and the dramatic landscapes around Blencathra. Trained in etching at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, her practice includes painting, printmaking, and weaving – blending abstraction and realism in a distinctive, light-filled style. She is influenced by artists like Winifred Nicholson and Paul Klee.
About the Film
‘Show Up and Start’ is a short film by Neil Emery which has won awards on the independent festival circuit. The film charts Ramsay’s journey from her postwar childhood in the northeast of England, through her formative years studying at the Camberwell School of Art in London, to her diverse experiences as a weaver and therapist, before ultimately returning to her true passion as a full-time artist. The documentary’s title, "Show Up and Start," encapsulates Ramsay's motivating artistic philosophy, emphasising the importance of consistent effort in the creative process. The film offers not just a glimpse into her creative world but also serves as a reminder that inspiration comes from dedication and perseverance.
Enhancing the film’s atmosphere is the sound and music from Shelley Roden, an award-winning foley artist at Skywalker Sound, and Jeffrey Roden, an acclaimed US composer. Their contributions underscore the emotional depth of Ramsay’s story, making "Show Up and Start" a compelling watch for anyone interested in the interaction between life and art.
