Medium: Blown Glass
Inspired by: The landscape, Somerset, rock pools, the seashore, pebbles. Will takes lots and lots of photos and extrapolates designs from these.
BA Hons, 3D Glass, West Surry College of Art and Design
William has been featured on numerous channels and has also been a consultant in blown glass for Oxfam in Guatemala, Mexico and El Salvador, and for the Fair Trade Organisation and Tradecraft in Bolivia.
He makes a wide range of different designs which are constantly evolving. By deliberately designing glass with a random factor he creates an aspect to his work that is beyond his control. He tries to use colour in a way that it affects the final shape of the piece in a natural and fluid way. In doing this, he has to work with the glass rather than completely imposing his own constrictions.
“I rarely measure a piece or write down exactly how I have made it. Sometimes this can lead to difficulties but it does mean that each design is less absolute and can evolve within its own parameters. Glass, as I know it, is a fluid material and I try and reflect that in my work.” - William Shakspeare
Through each piece, his inspiration from the world around him is evident. His surroundings and experiences are inextricably linked to his work. However the making, the history, the ideas are only a part of its beauty. Just as important, is what each piece says to you as you hold and look at it.
William’s work is in many private collections in the UK and beyond. He exhibits regularly and is represented by galleries in the British Isles. He undertakes public and private commissions.
